Mr. Holmes is primarily involved in business transactions, with a focus on commercial and residential real estate acquisition, development, leasing, sale, and finance.  He has represented clients in the sale and purchase of raw land and improved property, the completion of mortgage loans and secured credit facilities, the leasing of office, retail, industrial and general commercial space, and the development of commercial and residential property, including subdivisions and condominiums.  Some larger projects he has assisted with include the workout and unwind of a synthetic lease structure for a headquarters building, and development of a 1,000 megawatt natural gas fired co-generation power plant.  Locally he is involved in developments and real estate projects throughout New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties.  Prior to joining Murchison, Taylor & Gibson, PLLC, Mr. Holmes practiced commercial real estate law at firms located in downtown Houston and Chicago.

Professional Experience

  • Represented numerous landlords and tenants in negotiating leases, licenses, amendments and termination agreements, for spaces ranging from a few hundred square feet up to 400,000 square feet.  Properties have included office towers, retail complexes, industrial projects and other commercial properties.
  • Represented developers in acquisition of properties ranging from raw, rural land to major commercial office buildings.
  • Represented several lenders in loans secured by improved or to be developed property, including apartment complexes, industrial facilities and office buildings.  Transactions have ranged from less than $1 million to $50 million and more.
  • Represented owner/developer in a $29.5 million acquisition of a portfolio of retail shopping centers in Indiana and Kentucky.
  • Spearheaded foreclosures relating to a $56 million loan by a health care lender, including simultaneous foreclosure of facilities in seven counties.
